Glassware, used for centuries and beyond have always come in common shapes and dimensions. As we march into the 21st century, contemporary designers begin to explore new shapes and sizes to suit contemporary thinking.

French designer Etienne Meneau for example, is known in the designing circuit as someone who likes to push boundaries. His borosilicate glass carafes, meant to be used as drinking vessels, features four tubes with a height of 7.9 inches. These tubes or cylinders are all interconnected, and culminating at the mouth.

American designers Stephanie Forsythe and Tod MacAllen are also innovators way ahead of their time. Their glass tea pot ‘lanterns’ is relayed with a double layered glass wall which enfolds completely a void; thus creating a dimension for heating purposes or can also be used for icy cold liquids. The double layered walls persevere as excellent serving temperatures, while still making it possible for the lantern to be easily positioned and dispensed, akin to a wine bottle. Tea light candles can be placed in the concave underneath which maintains the beverage’s temperature. The designers have also incorporated matching float glasses with an inner cup supported by a glass tube.

Karim Rashad works for the award winning design house Gaia&Gino, and has come up with the brilliant idea of reversible glasses called Happy People Crystal Stemware – East to Asia consisting of different forms, all inspired by the indigenous cultures around the world. Each individual glass is named after a different country people; a red wine/ white wine glass is called Pierre, a French attribute, the beer glass is named Karl, in honor of Germany and Mehmet of Turkey is immortalized as a champagne glass or Turkish raki. Other glasses include the names Ivan, Ming Yu and Yuri.

The Rainman Carafe is also an ingenuous addition to the wine glass making industry. This Swedish import is truly brilliant. Instead of the usual stream of liquid making its way from the end of a carafe, it instead via several minute openings, transports the wine to the glass.

Another unique design has got to be the Ghost Goblet, made from 100% handblown, dishwasher safe glass. It is a work of art by itself. The Ghost Goblet comes in a set of four and measures 3″ w x 5 7/8 ” h and hold approximately 7.5 oz of liquids.

Last but not least is the Riedel decanters glassware, a beautiful series from Riedel with lucid and expansive forms. Gone are the days with conventional designs, as Riedel relays patterns and dimensions which are really great as decorative pieces or as the perfect gift. Riedel’s decanters especially are their best sellers. The prices of course, are high, but it is worth buying for its amazing designs.

We are in an era of tremendous change. When the Renaissance started it was at the time that someone invented printing, and some theses from Luther that became common knowledge rather than matters for private theological discussion. Printing was important. During World War II my father was a printer running his own printing works so he was not sent away to the war but continued to print by day and was a policeman by night. At that time all the typesetting was done by hand. It was labor intensive and dirty work. I remember the effort it took to get his hands clean after being in the printer’s ink.

At university one of the research projects was to build a computer the size of a shoe-box. If you take the cover off most modern desktop computers today the major computer components can be covered by a shoe-box. The rest of the space is for expansion boards. The first computers could only produce fairly basic printouts in terms of the format and look of the prints but over the next 10 years the printouts became more and more sophisticated so that the old typesetting printers were becoming redundant. Today we can produce the most sophisticated text, and photograph output on the most “basic” of current computers.

Instead of having to handwrite any books or draw any designs we can either obtain the originals electronically or use a scanner to put them into our computers. Copies of old documents and photographs can be smartened up and made legible. I have even read of some software to read the old headstones in a graveyard where they are illegible to the human eye but become clear to a computer. If I want to produce an agenda for a meeting then I simply print it off my computer and so the information is distributed.

So the author today need not look for a publishing house as they can publish a book on the Internet. The designer can publish his or her designs on the Internet and the designs can be in New York, London, Milan or Hong Kong in seconds. For the writer or designer with an honest client?le that is not an issue but it only takes one to pirate the book, design, or software and the value of their product rapidly diminishes.

There are many digital products circulating today that have been produced by individuals and groups of people. It could be writing or drawing, photography or video. It may be “How to” guides or recipes. All are the same in that someone can take that digital product and try to sell it or give it away.

One of the major growth industries on the Internet is to protect digital property. The first level of protection is on the development PC. The anti-virus software must be in place together with a good firewall and anti-spyware (including anti-adware, anti-spyware, and anti-malware). Once the product is up for sale then it must be protected from anyone who would create multiple copies to prevent them continuing to copy the product and render the existing copies worthless.

The impetus to stop online piracy is growing. There are two sides to this growth. On one side the big film and music companies are trying to stop their profits being eroded. On the other side authors, designers and software writers are trying to get the greatest benefit from selling their work on the Internet. The battle lines are drawn and it will take some time to see who will win. In the end the producers of the works must win or they will take their products out of the Internet marketplace and that would spoil people’s access to creative works on the Internet. The battle will not be easily won.

We are starting to see from many authors digital eBook access lock-down so pirates and family and friends will no longer get a copy of your book or design. In some ways this is harsh as the extra copy for your mother or friend will not be available and the prices of eBooks will rise but that is simply a reflection of that fact that writers need to make a living from their work. The extra costs will be to pay for software protection of the eBooks themselves.

The public at large will have to suffer from the higher prices. The pirates will try to continue operating taking the work of the author who cannot afford to get the lock-down software and many of them will stop writing as they cannot afford to write on the Internet.

The thing that I liked best about CinemaNow was that, when you purchase a movie, they give you the option of burning to a DVD that you can watch on your television. Of the sites I looked at CinemaNow seems to be the only one that will let you do this. The picture quality is good for paid content (some of the free or subscription content is lower quality), and the site overall seemed to be the best that I could find.

The next site that I found which topped the pack is Amazon’s new service Unbox. Of the rental sites I talk about today Unbox is the both, the easiest to use, and has the closest to DVD quality video. Movies become available as they are released to DVD, so the selection at the Amazon owned site is great. The best thing I found with Ubox was how easy the site was to use. Movies are properly categorized and easy to find. Being the largest online book retailer in the world has given Amazon experience in organizing an online storefront, and it shows with their new Unbox service. Great quality and ease of use make Unbox a viable contender for the best movie house online.

The last site that I would place in the top three is Apple’s Itunes. With itunes it isn’t picture quaility or ease of use that bring it to the top. In fact I find the itunes player clunky and the interface hard to use. What the Apple owned service does have going for it however, are the gadgets that you can buy to replay your purchased movies (no rental option on itunes). Movies downloaded from itunes can be played on your PC, through your video ipod, or through your television set with the new Apple TV unit. Combine the hardware with the up to date selection of movies and itunes stays in the top three on my list.
